Uh,there is no safety devices on propane BBQ. When you turn on the burners propane flows to the bottom from the burner just like somebody said. That’s where the burners are at the bottom.The igniter is attached to the side of the burner. As long as the knobs are turned on,the propane flows. If the lid is shut,you will probably not smell the “garlic smell” they put into it. If you hit the ignition switch, button, igniter… boom… It goes..there is plenty of oxygen down there to set it off…
